It’s strange how when you first wake up no matter how burdened you are with problems, no matter how miserable and depressed you are, in those first seconds of waking it is all forgotten. It’s like the brain has tried to reset everything but it just can’t manage to hold off the flood for more than a few seconds. If only it could.

When I woke up to the small bedroom, lit by fresh sunlight shining through the thin curtains, I felt happy. I felt normal. All the problems of the previous days were forgotten. Then I rolled over and saw Lydia slumbering peacefully, mouth open, chest rising and falling heavily, and everything rushed back to me.

I remembered how fucked I was.

In most people’s cases, they have the luxury of being able to let their misery and despair keep them in bed until they are forced to roll out if only to empty their bladder. I didn’t have that luxury as the tattoo on my wrist reminded me. The purple specs of sand were almost half gone now. And I had nothing to show for the time I’d used.

No dagger and no clues. If anything I was now burdened with more baggage than when I started. There was the mystery of the necromancers and now the hidden entity that was behind last night’s imprisonment. My curiosity had always been my burden. I’d never been able to turn down a good mystery. But this time I had to. I couldn’t allow myself to get distracted by these other problems. They were not my problems. The Ambrotos Dagger was my only concern.

I tossed back the duvet and pushed myself reluctantly out of bed. At least I hadn’t woken up cuddling Lydia this morning. I wouldn’t have to deal with the guilt of betraying Ashley. Not that I had betrayed her, it was an unconscious action and one that was driven by nothing. I felt no desire for Lydia. I barely knew her. I couldn’t even call her a friend, not really. She was an acquaintance. Like Zeke, she was only with me as part of her job.

‘What are you staring at?’ she said, snapping me out of my reverie. I hadn’t even noticed that she’d woken up, much less that I was staring at her. I suddenly realised how creepy this must be from her point of view.

‘Nothing. Sorry, I was just daydreaming,’ I said awkwardly. It was true but I could tell from her face that she was not convinced.

‘Oh, yeah? Daydreaming about me, were you?’ she said accusingly.

‘No, it wasn’t like that,’ I tried to assure her.

She jumped out of the bed not caring about the fact that she was only wearing a small t-shirt and a pair of knickers. You would’ve thought that her thinking I was a creep would make her want to cover up. ‘Look, I’m here to protect you and help you with the job. Not fuck you.’

‘I wasn’t trying to fuck you,’ I said helplessly. It was clear that I wasn’t going to win this ridiculous argument.
